Once the housing is installed, the options in cartridges can be confusing. Most commonly used are sediment cartridges (to filter out harmful "floaties" in the water) and carbon (or charcoal) cartridges (to cure most taste and odor problems including chlorine). Under sink models are available to enhance the taste of your drinking water without those unsightly faucet attachments. Hageman Water Conditioning strongly recommends a sediment filter ahead of any water softener or rust (or iron) filter.
